I recently joined Medium for syndicating content from a website whose main purpose is to illustrate use cases of genAI and provide entertaining or insightful content with it, so I thought it would make sense to comment in this post.
The main problem with generative AI tools is that most people don't fully understand how they work (which is perfectly fine) and don't need to use them for their own endeavors (which is also perfectly fine). However, it's natural human behavior to feel negative emotions towards new technology and mistrust those who do use it. As other people noted in their comments, this story has recurred with every technological advance known in human history, including the printing press, the radio, the typewriter, the Internet…
In most cases, when someone uses an AI-editor, a chatbot that writes long text quickly, or a text-to-image generator to create content with some quality or interest, the main problem with people who mistrust that is they believe the content is generated without any kind of human effort and intelligence, simply by pressing a button. That is normally very far from reality, particularly when the content is valuable or interesting. Having said that, nobody is obliged to learn a technology, just as it would be unfair to prevent people from using it. Therefore, simple disclosure policies, such as the one enforced by Medium, are coherent and helpful for maintaining a healthy and respectful community. I appreciate the transparency and clarity in communicating this policy.
NOTE: I passed the text I originally wrote through an AI chatbot to get some feedback on how to improve the writing and convey the message that I wanted to express. I do that every time I post something on social media because I believe my message will be more valuable to whoever reads it after being reviewed. By the way, that actually consumes more time than just writing the message as I think it and hit the "send" button immediately. My apologies to those who might think I'm doing something wrong or unethical. They can kindly ignore this message if that's the case.
