‘Borderline Arrogant’ Alyssa Thompson Is Ready For The Moment

Alyssa Thompson attended Angel City practice last Saturday like it was any other day for the teenager turned professional soccer player.

However, by the time she heading home, US Soccer was making arrangements to bring her to St. Louis in time to meetup with the rest of the USWNT roster.

Mal Swanson’s unfortunate injury — a patella tendon tear suffered late in the first half vs Ireland — required an immediate roster replacement and a potential opening on the World Cup roster after this window.

Within minutes, Alyssa Thompson — and her mom — were pushing through LA traffic.

“I was on my home from practice, my mom packed my bags, and we headed straight for the airport. Lots of traffic going there and I was the last person on the plane. There was a lot of stress for a couple of hours.” — Alyssa Thompson

It’s a frantic story — clothes flying across the room into barely opened duffel bags— but Thompson is already feeling like a player that belongs on the USWNT roster.

With Catarina Macario continuing to rehab at Lyon, there is real opportunity for someone to step into the USWNT attack. The spot is Trinity Rodman’s to lose, but Alyssa Thompson could be a real tool at Vlatko Andonovski’s disposal over the course of the upcoming tournement.
