WPSL Announces 3rd Tier Professional League, 10 Team Roster Including The Town FC

“The WPSL has long been recognized for the large number of its athletes who advance on to professional soccer whether to the NWSL or top global professional clubs and leagues,” — WPSL Commisioner Kendra Halterman said about the league’s legacy on Wednesday.

That legacy is what WPSL Pro aims to take to another level in the upcoming years. It’s no secret that US Soccer, and specifically US Women’s Soccer are missing steps on the pyramid to full time professional play but these community clubs are hoping that they can be a lifeline for potential US professionals.

The WPSL PRO plans to launch with 10 teams, one of those teams being Oakland based The Town FC.

“We don’t need to compete with the NWSL, but we have to be there to support players who’s only option in the past has been playing away from home” — Town FC Chair Benno Nagel told me this week. WPSL Pro is hoping to be a community based option for players working their way to NWSL clubs or even to be an option for NWSL clubs to make sure their players have an environment to progress on loan without sending players to another country on a completely different sporting schedule.
