Close to our home, far from theirs

This Giving Tuesday Talkinto is supporting a cause that is frustratingly close to home. After surviving a journey lasting thousands of miles over 8,000 men, women, and children have arrived at California’s border seeking asylum. With parts of the border being closed and no way to get through, all these 8,000+ people are left with no resources to camp out in a sports arena in Tijuana.

When we heard about the humanitarian crisis taking place right in our backyard, we had to help. Last week when we donated to the Camp Fire relief in Northern California organizations were so overwhelmed with donations that many could not accept our material items and only cash was being taken. Researching the organizations providing aid to migrants in Tijuana, we expected to be overwhelmed with our choices. Surprisingly enough there were next to none, a troublesome discovery leaving us to contemplate the living conditions and lack of resources these adults and children are facing.

We were lucky to stumble upon an organization called Border Angels. Border Angels mission is to reduce the number of fatalities along the California border. Border Angels has a migrant embassy in Tijuana from which they have begun to donate supplies and house migrants from the caravan. From their website, they have different ways you can choose to give. You can make a monetary donation that will go towards supplies most needed or the intangibles like rent and utilities for shelter. They also have a registry through Walmart and Target, where you can buy needed supplies directly. That’s what we did.

We were able to donate 80 sleeping bags, 12 packs of feminine hygiene products, and 50 packs of underwear.
