On this week’s Pop Life Talkshow, Tony Zhou, film editor and creator of recent viral sensation The Marvel Symphonic Universe, sat down to chat with Anil Dash about his YouTube series Every Frame a Painting, which covers everything you ever wanted to know about the filmmaking process. They talked about how Tony fell into film editing, what it’s like to produce and research episodes of his show, and how the series came to be.

This whole channel began because I was grumpy while working on assignment. I just went into work one day, and the producer and I had a long convoluted argument about a cut that was really really basic. Like a single cut in a video. And I was trying to explain the most basic aspect of my craft, which is that if you cut someone walking through a door, you don’t match perfect continuity. They come through the door, cut, you repeat three frames on the next shot.

In case you missed it, check out Anil’s full chat with Tony Zhou, and find all the episodes of Every Frame a Painting on YouTube to get a peek behind the filmmaking curtain. And if you haven’t done it already, download Talkshow so that you can participate in next week’s episode of Pop Life…or even host a show of your own.
