TalkTips-Day 01: Know Your Audience

I tend to speak at a lot of developer conferences, and a few design conferences. As I’ve shifted into more “inspirational/motivational” territory, I’m asked to bring some of my talks to present in-house at companies, everything from “mom” groups to financial institutions, enterprise software companies to gaming and animation studios, all around the world. The audience for each of these groups can vary quite significantly.

It’s really important to know WHO I’m going to be speaking to so I can make sure I’m sharing my message in a way that particular audience can connect with. I can make sure any cultural references don’t get lost in translation, and that things which may be funny in one part of the world are still funny in another, or not right for sharing at all.
