The poster shows the cartoon character, Hercules, wounded. The indexical signs of bruised eyes, bleeding nose, and a cut on his face, suggests that Hercules had been beaten up. The caption of the poster suggests that it was a female who beat him up. The caption “Don’t be ashamed to ask for help” urges audiences to seek help if they are suffering from abuse.

From a cultural perspective, this poster reflects the culture of males stereotypically being treated as a “hero” like Hercules, who serves as symbol for masculinity. However, because of this stereotype of males being “heroes” and physically stronger than women, when they are being abused or bullied, males tend to be ashamed about it and not seek help.

This poster shows that even the most masculine man can be abused and be ashamed of it. It persuades audiences (male victims of abuse) using pathos, telling them that there are other males suffering from the same problem. When audiences know that there are others facing the same problem, they will be more convinced to seek help. This visual image successfully convince audiences that they are not alone in facing abuse, and they should not be ashamed to seek help. I am inspired to encourage male victims of abuse that it is nothing too embarrassing to step out of their shell and ask for help.

This video shows the culture of people stereotyping males as the dominant gender, and females as weaker. This causes the public to defend women when they are threatened by violent behaviors of men. Yet, when the male is attacked, people just look on and even laugh.

The video was edited using the montage technique, putting together images captured from hidden cameras. The image of people looking on from different angles illustrates that people from different walks of life have the same reaction and stereotype towards the different genders. The usage of hidden cameras also contributes to the persuasiveness of this video, as it reflects reality without staging public’s reactions. Audiences will realize that they may have the same reactions as the people in the video, and reflect about their stereotypical behavior. This technique uses pathos by inducing guilt to persuade audiences to change their mindsets.

The video also persuades using logos when it shows the statistics “40% of domestic violence is suffered by men” at the end. Audiences find out that males make up almost half of domestic violence victims but are yet receiving so little attention.

This video successfully reflects realities of the public’s stereotypes and serves as a wake up call to its audiences. Stereotypical attitudes are deeply ingrained and we adopt them without realizing. I am inspired to show the contrast between our attitudes towards men and women in our work.
