Old Lovers
We met at 4 inside a bath
Playing with water splash splash splash
By 6, “go wash alone now” we were told
“Why?” we yelled and they said “Well,
Boys and girls must clean themselves
You see, you two are gettin’ too darn old.”
So from then we’re no longer friends
’Cause cooties got us to pretend
If we get too close we might just catch a cold
But teenage years they roll on through
And I can’t help but look at “you-
don’t believe in cooties?” “Nah, we’re too darn old.”
Now we spend time stuck at the lips
So naturally, a sales pitch hits
“Hey! Why don’t you two buy these rings of gold?”
We ask ’em “Why?” and they reply
“Come on now guys you know its time
You see you two are gettin’ too darn old.”
Kids brought joy but they came and left
Can’t sit around and wait for death
Let’s have some fun before our bell is rung
We packed our bags, got on a plane
They all yelled “You’re too old! Insane!”
But jumpin’ out we never felt so young.
This is one of many poems/stories from my book, “but i don’t drink coffee…” which you can find here on Amazon.
