Pandemic situation in the world and subsequent advice on social distancing and self-isolation drastically changed our lifestyle. Thus, for many of us a typical day is now limited to the short route between sofa and refrigerator, plus some 15 minutes on the balcony and 30 minutes per week going outside for groceries. Yet, we surely want to stay fit and keep our immune system strong. Therefore, now more than ever it is important to think of an effective workout routine you can practice daily at your very home.

To help you with this task we have invited Kaisa Sööt, a Yoga & Meditation coach at TalTech Sports Club to share her motivation and inspire you with her 10 minute yoga flow video she recorded at home for TalTech student community.

10 Minute Yoga Flow with Kaisa Sööt

Why practice yoga?

In yoga you only work with your body and no extra equipment is needed. You can practice on a mat if you have one, or simply on the carpet or on the floor at your home. If you think yoga is something complicated, we want to cheer you up — there are many yoga poses (asanas), that will suit a beginner. If on the contrary you think that yoga is way too simple you should know there are some yogic exercises, which are difficult to endure for even 30 seconds.

What are the advantages of yoga?

Yoga is multifaceted and everyone can choose what suit them best: the teacher, the pace and the rhythm. Yoga is not just physical activity, it’s a lifestyle. Strength and flexibility of the body, peace of mind and the love and acceptance towards the world around you are all “side effects” of yoga practice. Besides, you only need your motivation to start! Get a simple T-shirt, shorts or leggings and get to your practice.

How not to give up the practice after just a few days?

We all love to get results quickly — all or nothing. But the thing is, you need weeks to form any habit. And so, it is important to find an enjoyable way to keep yourself fit, which is only possible when you find physical activity that brings you pleasure. In other words, try out different activities and learn to distinguish between laziness and boring non-suitable exercises. And don’t forget to set yourself a written goal, such as “30 minutes daily exercise routine”, or “30-days-workout April”, stick it on the wall and mark your success.

What about healthy nutrition?

Try to stick to cooking proper meals. A good way to start is to keep only healthy food at home: vegetables, fruits, nuts, dried fruits, protein products (lean meat, fish, homemade cheese, tofu) and cereals. Always keep a glass of water close by. Every time you decide to have a snack — listen to yourself. You may actually need to take a few sips of water, rest for 15 minutes or do a little warm-up. Another advice is to set up your own marathon — such as quarantine without buns, sugar or alcohol (you can choose one of those or more).
