Social anxiety has been a rather big issue for a lot of young adults nowadays, especially new college students who are about to face new, hard challenges, meeting new people and living in a different life-style. All of that can be a huge challenge for someone who has social anxiety, as it requires for someone to communicate with new people/classmates, be in different new places, and for some, it might be really stressing.

This blog will help you get acquainted with various tips to overcome or lessen your social anxiety.

First off, you are not alone in this, many college students experience social anxiety, sadly, no one talks about it enough, as it is an important matter to speak of and to provide various tips to students to help overcome it. So, buckle up, read this blog, breath, and try these tips to help you manage your social anxiety.

  1. Don’t rush.
Many college students once they arrive to their new destination, they immediately try to join in various clubs, societies, parties and etc. You do not have to do all of that at the first step, it will increase your anxiety. Instead, get to know the place, discover new interesting things that you might like, you can engage in small activities, meet someone and get to know them as a start of interacting with people. Remember, you don’t have to do everything so quickly, stick to your own pace.
  2. Try student counselling.
This might help a lot as you can share your social anxiety with a stranger, talking it all out can be a relieve and it might prepare you for your next steps, whether it is meeting new people, be at a certain event and etc. Talking it all out can really start lessening your social anxiety, as you will be more aware of it, realising that it does not define you, and that you can get rid of it, if worked upon.
  3. Create your space.
I think this tip is really important. Having/creating your own personal space can be very helpful, for you will have quality time with yourself, you can practice yoga, do some meditation, breathing exercises, and whatever you like to do on your own. Having some time for yourself is very critical, you get rid of social stress, forget about what you should/have to do for the next couple of days and you get to just relax.
  4. Network.
Let your friend whom you have known for quite a long time and feel comfortable with to introduce you to other friends. This can help you step by step lessen your social anxiety by interacting with people in a known circle, you might have a chance to meet people who are like you, which is even better, perhaps you could share some of your stories and they as well, as meeting people who share the same thing will make you realise you are not on this alone, it will absolutely give you a boost to try to overcome social anxiety, you will be feeling much more open and ready to kick social anxiety out of your system.
  5. Proper diet.
Eating properly is very important, and I don’t mean that you should be vegan or eat meat everyday. What I mean is, eat regularly, for instance, eat a lot of greens, as they can boost your mood and make you feel good. Avoid consuming a lot of caffeine and sugar, they can aggravate anxiety.

It is time to act and get rid of social anxiety! Try these tips or might as well create something of your own that you know it can help you. Take each day as it is, don’t be too serious, and listen to your body and mind.
