It’s already been one busy week at TalTech, and the ride doesn’t end there! On top of homework assignments and group projects that have already been assigned, students have an obligation to submit their study plan in TalTech’s student information system, ÕIS. This is imperative to fulfill your studies! Because ÕIS can be a little trick to navigate (even for long-time students), here’s a comprehensive guide on submitting your study plan. The first thing you’ll need to do is to pull up TalTech’s system and log in.

Once you have signed on to ÕIS, your home page should look like this:

ÕIS Homepage

If you have already completed semesters at TalTech, there will be information from your most recent semester here.

Browsing the menu options on the left of the page, you’ll see the “Timetables” option under “General”. Clicking it will bring you to this page:

Timetable

These timetables will include all the appropriate classes for your situation. They are sorted by school, major, type of degree, and semester. Follow your own steps according to your own program, but I will provide an example of what I did my first semester at TalTech. I currently am completing my bachelor’s study of The International Business program in the School of Business and Governance. Thus, I will click on my school’s tab.

Select your School

Next, click on your major. If you are unsure of your major’s abbreviation, check the four letters at the end of your student code in the upper right corner under your name.

Study Program Abbreviation and Group Number

You will see many “codes” pop up under your major. These are differentiated by semester and individual groups. In my case, any time “one”proceeds “TVTB”, that means that these classes are meant for students in their first semester. The last number of the code differentiates your timetable from others in the same program and semester as you. We see three different “TVTB1” codes under this tab with ending numbers one through three. If you are unsure as to what group number you are, contact your dean. For example’s sake, I will check TVTB11.

Timetable Example

There’s a lot of information on this page! I’ll break it all down for you, starting with the five W’s: who, what, when, where, why. On this page, you’ll see the name of the course (what), the professor leading the course (who), what time the class is offered (when), the location of the class (where), and why it has been recommended to you (why).

Students typically take on 30 credits per semester. Although you cannot see how many ECTS each class is yet, you can see that the classes are categorized by C, E, and OP. These are otherwise known as compulsory, elective, and optional classes. Compulsory classes must be completed in order to achieve your degree. Your degree might have an elective requirement to fulfill in order to graduate. Elective classes are offered if you would like to fulfill your elective requirement this semester, and often go hand-in-hand with other studies you’ll complete that semester. Optional classes are exactly that, but they are usually offered because they are helpful in adapting to life at TalTech. You’ll notice that Estonian Language and Culture is offered as an optional class. This is a great opportunity for understanding your surroundings while studying here, as well as learning some communication basics that will help you in a pinch.

This might be one of the most important things you come to learn about the ÕIS timetable: check the duration of the classes! Notice how the timetable is already offering me eight classes on just Monday and many of them occur at the same time! Don’t panic. Semesters at TalTech span 16 weeks. Under “Duration”, you’ll notice some sets of numbers here and there. This is to indicate the weeks that class takes place. Management and Leadership (the second option) on Mondays from 9:00–13:30 only occur on week 15 of the semester.

To wrap up the timetable situation, check off all applicable classes using the little box next to the course name. If you’d like to add all suggested classes, there is a button labeled “Add courses to my timetable” at the bottom of the week. In my example, I will check all of the compulsory courses, and the elective, “Economic Sociology”. Each time you check off a box, a notification like this should pop up:

Course is Added to Timetable

Now that I have all of my intended classes added to my timetable, I will scroll back to the top of the page and click the tab “My Timetable”.

Timetable
My Timetable

There’s four options to understanding your timetable. The first option (toggled automatically by the page) shows you your schedule for the current week. I recommend you click the third button, showing your abbreviated week. This shows you your whole semester’s schedule at a glance. You then have the option to download the iCalendar file if you’re an Apple user, or you can manually enter your schedule in whatever system you prefer (Google Calendar, your own planner, etc.).

Understanding the timetable gives you insight to your schedule but it does not register you into your classes. That is the last step we have to take in order to submit our study plan. Submitting your study plan will require you to take note of the course codes listed in the course title.

To register your classes, look at the menu options on the left side of the screen. Under “My Study Information”, click “My Study Plan”.

My Study Plan

You’ll notice a tab saying, “Select course for study plan”. You can enter each class individually, or you can click, “Generate according to the study plan”. This will register you to all of the classes listed in the timetable. I will hit this button, and then easily remove the few classes I don’t want to be registered to. This is much less time intensive than the opposite; typing in each course by its code.

Save and SUBMIT

Finally, scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit, “Save and Submit”. This will register you to your classes! If you’d like any changes to be made, you can always retract your study plan, make the necessary adjustments, then resubmit. TalTech students have until September 5th to submit their study plans!

Suggest other topics that desperately need explanation in the comments, and we’ll respond with an article as soon as we can! Until then, Mente et Manu, TalTech.
