The Golden Touch: The Tale of King Midas

King Midas was a wealthy king who ruled over Phrygia, a kingdom in Asia Minor. He was a just and generous ruler, and his people loved him. However, Midas had one great desire: he wanted everything he touched to turn to gold.

One day, the god Dionysus came to visit Midas. Dionysus was impressed by Midas’s generosity, and he decided to grant Midas his wish. He told Midas that he could have the golden touch, but warned him that it was a dangerous gift.

Midas was overjoyed. He immediately began to test his new power. He touched a tree, and it turned to gold. He touched a rock, and it turned to gold. He even touched a handful of dirt, and it turned to gold. Midas was so happy that he could not stop laughing.

However, Midas soon realized that his wish had come with a price. Everything he touched turned to gold, even the food he ate and the water he drank. Midas’s wife and children were turned to gold, and his palace became a golden prison.

Midas begged Dionysus to take away the golden touch. Dionysus agreed, but he told Midas that he had to wash in the river Pactolus to remove the power. Midas did as he was told, and the golden touch was washed away.

Midas learned his lesson, and he never wished for anything again. He lived out the rest of his days in peace and happiness.

Midas’s story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of greed. It teaches us that we should be content with what we have, and that we should not be tempted by the desire for more.
