We all know what GIFs are and have all watched some pretty hilarious clips online. But who makes all of these GIFs, and how do they do it? Well I am going to teach you how, using a simple to use, free, online GIF generator, where you can make GIFs out of your own videos or ones you find online.

Step by Step:

For a video you find online:

Step 1: Go to https://giphy.com/create/gifmaker

Step 2: Enter the link to the video you found online, it can be from either YouTube, Vimeo, or any video URL. You don’t need to hit enter, the site will automatically pull up the video for you.

Step 3: Scroll down to the time bars. Using the first scroll bar, use it to locate the spot in the video that you want your GIF to begin.

Step 4: Once you have done this, next use the second scroll bar to find the end of the video clip, or you can manually edit the length of the clip by entering how many seconds you wish for it to last. (You can see this scroll bar in the photo above).

Step 5: After this, if you wish to add text/a caption to your GIF, you have the ability to do so. Add whatever you like! You can also edit text style, color, and text location in the GIF.

Step 6: If you wish to add tags to your GIF, you can also do this now. Tags are phrases or words that link to a bigger audience, so when someone looks up these words/phrases, they are led to your clip.

Step 7: Click “Create Your GIF”! This can take a few minutes, so be patient.

Step 8: Once your clip is made, you have the ability to favorite your GIF, copy a link that will lead you and others to your GIF if you share it, you can download it to your computer, or you can embed the GIF in other social media forms. You can also directly share your GIF via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media outlets. Ta da! You’re done!

If you wish to use your own video:

  1. Go to the same website provided above.
  2. Instead of copying the link to a video into the box provided, you can click on the area below the link area, and this will allow you to browse your computer for your video.
  3. Once you find it and it uploads to the site to be edited, follow all of the same directions up above! (Steps 3–8)

Here is the link to the GIF that I created throughout these instructions and in the pictures provided! I found this link on YouTube.

I hope this tutorial helps you make some pretty hilarious GIFs! I look forward to watching them!
