Everyone who uses the internet has probably seen memes. The Oxford dictionary defines a meme as “ an element of a culture or system of behavior that may be considered to be passed from one individual to another by non-genetic means, especially imitation.”

Knowing how to create a meme allows you to be able to actively participate in this aspect of the internet and interact with other users.

Step-by-step

First: The first thing you want to do when creating a meme is to pick a picture you want to use

Dumpster I saw on my walk today, butterflies were flying around it and you can vaguely make out the prison in the distance

Second: Google meme maker, and go to the option that says imgflip.com

Third: Go to “upload your own image”, go to “upload from your device” or copy and paste an image URL. Pick the image you had decided on in step one.

Step four: Now you get to decide on your text for your meme. Once you decide what you want to say type it into the “Top text” or “Bottom text” areas. I recommend breaking up your text between top and bottom so its not uneven.

Step five: Now we generate our meme! Click the blue “generate meme” button. I usually check the “private” box, because the memes I make are for class, and it makes it easier to save.

This is the result

Final step: There are plenty of options on sharing and saving your meme! (I normally “download” it and then screenshot the image and crop it). From this point you can share your meme on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more, or save it into your camera roll.

This is my finished meme!

Learning how to make a meme has been useful in a learning environment and outside of that. Memes are used to make political statements, create satire, and make people laugh. Have fun with it, and enjoy this simple step by step tutorial!
