A Meme is “a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users” (Google). MEME’s are the new social media fad! Every picture is getting turned into a MEME and passed virally throughout Facebook and other social media platforms! Do you wish you could make funny pictures from pictures of your friends or animals? I created this MEME using a picture of my dog. Now you can create your own with these easy to follow directions!

Step 1: Find a picture

I chose a funny picture that my friend took of my dog on snapchat. She saved the picture to her phone and sent it to me. After she sent it to me, I saved it to my computer.

Step 2: Find a caption

Think of what you want the caption of the picture to be, you can make it anything you want from funny to serious.

For this picture I decided to go with “When your professor asks you a question in front of the entire class and you have to pretend you weren’t shopping online instead of listening to the lecture”

Step 3: Add the caption

The first step is opening the picture that you have saved to your laptop!

Once you open the picture, look for the “Markup” icon at the top right-hand side of the screen. Click on “Markup”.

Once you have clicked the “Markup” icon, you should see a small display bar pop up that looks like this. Find the “T” icon and click to insert text.

When you click the “T” icon a text box will appear somewhere on your picture. Click within the box labeled “Text” to begin typing the caption you have chosen.

If you chose a longer caption like I did, you can highlight the entire text and find the “A” icon at the top of the page. This will drop down a small display box with tools to help you edit your text.

For mine, I just chose to shrink the size of the text to 28 pt font and ensured that it was centered. If you choose to you can change the color, alignment, underline, bolding, italics and font type as well.

Step 4: Save the project

Now it is time to save your artwork! At the middle-top of the screen you will see the picture name followed by “-Edited”. Click on the “-Edited” to rename your project to whatever you choose.

Step 5: Add to the platform of your choice!

The final step is to take your final picture and upload it to the web platform of your choice! You have created your first MEME and maybe yours will end up going viral!

TIPS to improve:

  • There are other websites that you can use to generate MEME’s such as MEME Generator or Kapwing.
  • Change the font size or type
  • Creating original and/or catchy captions
