In 2018, we take for granted the convenience of using our smartphones to take screenshots. Need to save a bus schedule? Screenshot. Tickets? Screenshot. Important email? Screenshot. Funny picture? Screenshot.

However, we are not on our phones all of the time. Sometimes we use ‘traditional’ computers to do work or have fun. How do we take screenshots then? How can I take screenshot that doesn’t have my ugly start menu, task-bars or backgrounds?

Fortunately, if you have a Windows computer, this is easy to do with the snipping tool. The snipping tool allows you to save pictures of parts of the screen you choose- you can even take a picture of your whole screen!

Step One

Go to your search menu. This is located in the bottom left corner of your screen.

Step Two

Search for ‘snipping tool’ your computer will find it for you. You can also search manually by going to your control panel.

Step Three

Snipping tool will then open. It has a variety of options. Including ‘new’ ‘mode’ and ‘delay’.

Modes include a ‘rectangle’ and ‘freeform’ option as well as a window snip or a full screen snip. Rectangle mode allows you to take screenshots that are rectangles (any size). Freeform allows you to take a screenshot that is in a custom shape- you can move the cursor to decide where to cut. Window snip lets you screenshot the entire window you have open while full-screen takes a picture of your whole screen.

The delay button functions similarly to a delay button on a real camera.

Step Four

Press new to start snipping. Rectangle snipping is similar to creating a text box in word.

Simply drag your cursor (the plus sign) around the section of the screen you would like to screenshot.

Step Five

Edit your picture!

After you choose what you want to snip, snipping tool automatically takes the screenshot. It then brings you to a screen like above.

Snipping tool allows you to draw on your photo with a variety of markers, highlighters, and erasers.

It’s just that easy!
