Lunapic Photo Editing Tech Tutorial
I love photography, but I’m not too skilled with photo editing. Which is why I have always wanted to improve on those skills. Through this class and the DS106 assignments, I have found a great (FREE!) website called Lunapic that has a lot of the same tools as Adobe Photoshop. It took a lot of trial and error but I have mastered some of the skills needed to make some unique, edited photos.
In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to cut out one image and add it to another image for a new background. This skill is useful when creating out of this world images, pretending to travel to new places, or creating a cool story through a photograph!
Here are some photos I created for DS106 Assignments using Lunapic.
For this example, I decided to take the Loch Ness monster and paste it into a photo of a friend and I at the lake!

Step 1: Go to the Lunapic Website
Lunapic does not require you to sign up for an account in order to use it, however you can sign up for free if you wish! I have linked the word “Lunapic” above so you can click that link to get to the home page.
Step 2: Upload the Photo
Just below the main photo of the bridge, says “Open URL” you can either upload a photo by typing in a URL, or chose the “More Upload Options” tab to the right of it.
Step 3: Use the Cutout Tool
The cutout tool is located on the tool bar to the left of the page. Click it and outline the object you want to PASTE onto another image.
It takes a bit of practice, but you can hit clear as many times as you want in order to outline it again.
Step 4: Hit the Copy/Paste button
This is located above the outlined image.
You should be brought to this screen next:
As you can see, you have a copied cut out of the original image. Click on the cutout and then click the clipboard icon located in the tools to the left to save this image.
Step 5: Upload the Background Image
At the top of the screen, the farthest tab to the left is the “Upload” button. You can upload the background image in the same way that you uploaded the original.
Step 6: Click the Clipboard Icon in the Tool Bar
This will bring you to your cutout image. Scroll to the bottom and you will see “Paste Clipboard Image into Working Image.” Click this.
Step 7: Adjust the Size of the Cutout
You can adjust the size of the cutout to better fit the image by pulling the yellow squares at each corner. You can also use the tools at the top to make the image appear transparent or rotate it.
Step 8: Click Apply
This is located at the top of the finished image. This will finalize your photo. You can then hit save, and your newly created image will be downloaded to your computer.
The Final Product
Little did we know the Loch Ness monster was right behind us in our photo op!
