Eddie had burst through the office door, terrified for what might be happening to Violet at the hands of an angry Vivian.
The door swung in and bounced against the door stop as Eddie shouted for Vivian to stop. After the crash, her shout, and the creak of the door, the scene became impossibly silent.
She stared into the room for a moment before she closed the door and walked away.
She went to a table, where she dropped her satchel, sat down, and lay her face on her arms. She stayed that way until Violet pulled out a chair and sat down beside her.
Violet didn’t speak for a while, and Eddie didn’t move.
