It was late, and a touch of weariness hung in Charlie’s deep-set blue eyes, reflecting the strain of the evening’s formalities. As he focused on the dark road, Eleanor turned toward him, her gaze slightly unfocused from the evening’s indulgences.

“Did you notice Dr. Stahl’s new assistant tonight?” she asked.

Charlie was a man of classical good looks — a strong jawline, neatly trimmed mustache, and a head of dark hair just beginning to show silver at the temples. His tailored tuxedo jacket, worn with an ease that spoke of years of formal occasions, accentuated his broad shoulders.

“Mmm, very efficient too. Kept the evening on track. I believe Stahl would’ve been lost without him.”
