“Enabling students to interact with someone directly from the industry is something that was necessary!”

Name: Gunvarun Singh
Company: Texas Instruments
Profile: Analog Design Engineer
Alma Mater: BITS Pilani, Pilani Campus

Gunvarun works at Texas Instruments, Bangalore as a Design Engineer and holds a keen interest in signal processing, front end analog design and sequence based testing.

Gunvarun joined our Community as a Job Coach in June 2016 and has Coached several aspiring electrical engineers across analog, communications, design and hardware engineer profiles since then. We sat down with Gunvarun to understand his thoughts on the current placement process and what he feels of the engineers as they come out of it. Having been a key-member of the Placement Team during his time in college, Gunvarun possesses an insider view of the placement process and was glad to share his insights on campus placements this season and common pitfalls of students appearing for it.

As TapChief Job Coach, how was your experience with the students that you coached?

I think the students that I coached were really interested and attentive. They were dedicated towards placement preparation and took it extremely seriously. Several times, I asked them to read up on something or be prepared with something specific — They always were. These students showed me multiple updated versions of their resume and asked for my feedback. The effort they are making toward Campus Placements is commendable.

What are the common strengths and weaknesses among the candidates?

The candidates that I coached were very strong technically. When it came to their core concepts, they were well prepared and going in the right direction. Their resume reflected their experience accurately and also some impressive core skills.

However, I would recommend that the students work on communication and confidence. Being strong technically is really important but while in an interview, communication is crucial. They need to be confident in what they do. Another suggestion is that they take more analytical approaches to problems and that they think out loud, that is they should let the interviewer know their thought process.

How do you think Job Coach can best help students with Campus Placements?

This program has been structured in the right way and takes a good direction as the sessions proceed. Interaction with an industry professional is a new way to look at placement preparation.

The communication is very informative as well. Coaches have an idea before the session what they are going to be focusing on.

I’d credit the seamless process to the Chat and Reschedule feature. Unlimited Chat with the student throughout the Coaching program was a godsend. I used it regularly to share some preparation material or communicate with my ward off-call. The Chat interface also went a long way in making rescheduling calls easier.

Any other thoughts on the program?

Yes. The job that you are doing is fantastic and the way the program works is also really good.

I would also like to wish the students the best for their campus placements! I believe they all have it in them and a little preparation and guidance will go a long way in making their dream job a reality.

First job right out of college is a cornerstone moment in every student’s life. We love the fact that folks like Gunvarun have joined our mission to make it simple for you.
