Watch the sun rise on top of the world

Haleakalā is a mammoth shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the island of Maui. Haleakalā translates to “House of the Sun” and while watching the sun rise at 10,023 feet, it is easy to see why. Stand above the clouds as the sun rises over the world.

Achieving this requires getting up at 3AM and driving up a very steep and windy road. Our friends who live in Maui insisted it was a must do and having done it, I couldn’t agree more. Give yourself plenty of time to get up to the top before sunrise and wear multiple layers as temperatures at the summit frequently dip to 40F or lower.
