Meet Our SUPERSTAR who is a Motivator

Childscapes Centre is a learning space run for at-risk children. For many children, this centre is their
first introduction to a learning culture. Childscapes offers children a safe and joyful space within their community where they can learn and play together. The community youth who manage the centre become role models for the children and mentor them towards success.

Childscapes partnered with Tarkeybein to enhance the reading levels of children coming to their five learning spaces across Delhi. The reading program provides contextual content and training support
for the teachers.

Tarkeybein trained the Childscapes facilitators in storytelling and visualization processes to teach sound and pattern recognition. Also, the content in the form of books, videos and comics became interesting teaching learning tool for both teachers and students in the centre.

Shiv has been teaching English in Childscape Saket Centre for the last 5 months. He is implementing Tarkeybein’s curriculum for all children. He was initially not confident enough to teach English. However, the enthusiastic response from children to his way of teaching motivated him a lot.

Shiv was overjoyed with the experience of bringing out children’s imagination and creativity in the language learning process. It was surprising for him to see children coming up with interesting stories from their everyday life. This helped him understand their context better which in turn helped him to build a strong rapport with the children.

Over the past 5 months of Tarkeybein’s engagement with Shiv, we observed a lot of positive changes in Shiv’s confidence in teaching English. Shiv is now enthusiastic to teach English to children. He puts in a lot of effort to help children learn to read. He also tries to use the phonemic approach for
teaching other language subjects like Hindi. Shiv shared about an incident when he used Tarkeybein’s segmenting activities to help a girl to read a difficult Hindi word. He is now beautifully able to break the walls of classroom and teach using children’s everyday experiences.

He believes in his students and their capabilities. He appreciates his students for being quick learners. He is open to taking feedback and looks forward to learn new teaching strategies.

In our midline assessments we saw there have been a drastic improvement in reading levels of the children at Saket Centre. The kids who initially struggled to read even three letter words are now able to read 50 words in a minute. Also, now the kids are more confident towards reading English.
