Tarot reading for February 9, 2023
“This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays.” — Douglas Adams.
One of my favorite quotes from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Thursdays have always felt weird to me. It’s not the middle of the week but not quite the end of the week either. I like the idea of calling it Friday Eve! Often I need a good pick-me-up for Thursday. Something that gets me through the day. Today’s cards are helping us a little bit.
The eight of pentacles, our situation card in today’s spread, shows a man sitting on a bench, working on a pentacle. Whenever I see this card, I think that he’s making money. Pentacles are often associated with money or finances. And here he is, working on a pentacle; perhaps he’s the guy who makes them. He’s working away, and it looks like he enjoys his work. He seems to be in complete control and has mastered his craft. The town is off in the distance, so I don’t think anyone bothers him too much. He’s doing his thing, doing what he does, making pentacles.
The Eight of Pentacles is telling us that we like our work. We like what we do in our jobs. That we feel a sense of pride in our job. We work hard to do our best. And that’s a good thing. This is something we should be proud of. This card is telling us we’re doing a good job.
Our next card in the spread is our advice card, or what to do about our situation. What came up was the Magician. This card shows a man standing at a table with symbols from each of the four suits from the minor arcana. A wand, a cup, a pentacle, and a sword. His right arm is raised, and he seems to be holding a rod. His left arm is down. This refers to the saying, “as above, so below.” I see this pose as a symbol for the flow of energy, from up to down, positive to negative. There are vines above him and flowers and plants below him. The card suggests that he is surrounded by life and nature. Lastly, he has an infinity symbol over his head, sometimes referred to as the symbol of life. This card also speaks to us of mastery, of being in control. The magician in this card is a master over all the elements. And he has also mastered the flow of energy as well.
In our spread today, the Magician is telling us that a way to enjoy our work is to become a master of it. To master our craft, to hone our skills to a point where we are experts. And to feel good about the work we do. This is one way we can take control over our work lives and be more fulfilled at work. And the yellow background in this card is about hope and optimism. So this is a good card. It’s a good thing to be an expert at what you do.
The takeaway card today is the ten of wands. A man is seen walking, carrying a bundle of wands. They’re big and heavy looking. And it even appears that he might be struggling to keep these wands together in his hands. His destination is seen in the background; he’s almost there, but not yet. He still has a little way to go. The sky is a blue, cloudless sky, so no storms and no problems are on the horizon. When this card comes up, I usually associate it with doing too much — taking on more than you can handle. But today, I see the card differently.
This card speaks to us of hard work and determination that we are almost to the finish line for the week. Almost there. Don’t give up. Yes, there is still a lot to do. And we’re carrying a lot right now, but just a couple more days, and we’ll be able to put the wands down and rest.
To sum up, this spread tells us about the work we do. And to maximize our enjoyment at work, we should strive to be the best we can be in our work. The cards also tell us to hang on for a little longer. The work is hard at times, but the weekend will soon come. And we’ll be able to rest and enjoy the fruits of our labor.
