It turns out the same reason why Steve Jobs, President Obama, Mark Zuckerberg and Albert Einstein largely wore the same thing all the time.

Decision Fatigue.

The paradox of choices in today’s lifestyle is that we have too many choices. Makes sense, right?

Yesterday I took some time off with my daughter to go to the beach (yes I know, and yes, I have the freedom to do it). My cellphone died within the first hour of the six hours we spent there. So I was forced to observe what was happening. The people having fun were eating, in the water, talking to friends.

Others were zoned out on their smartphones, deciding which app to post this experience on. I posted to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter within 15 minutes of getting there. Take that suckers!

Anyway, here’s what Pat Metheny said:

The honest answer is; apathy. apathy in this case towards style and fashion. i just don’t care about it. to me, i wish there was a uniform, like a janitor’s uniform or something for what we do. i do see being a musician as a service industry — not unlike refrigirator repair or something. for me, by wearing essentially the same thing all the time, which is something that isn’t really ever in style or out of style, it is one less thing i have to think about, so i can think more about what i should be thinking about.

Genius, right?
