Hybrid classes (also known as blended courses or flipped classrooms) mix face-to-face teaching with remote and other kinds of virtual learning. In today’s world in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers are forced to teach half the students in-person while having the other half online simultaneously. This new situation has proven difficult for teachers to cope with, and they are burning out at a rapid rate.

Schools and teachers have turned to new education technology tools to help them manage the classrooms and cut out the extra work this new normal has created. But all is not doomed yet! What we see in our usage data is that teachers who work with Google Classroom to manage their classes and use Taut integration for handwritten tasks save on average 20 hours every month. It’s a huge time-saver that leaves teachers more hours to concentrate on what matters — student growth.

But what is the best way to use Taut with Google Classroom in hybrid teaching classes and how to get started? Here are 5 steps you need to get going. (Check out step number 3—it’s the key!)

1. Use Taut with Google Classroom

After signing up at tautapp.co you’re ready to start assigning and reviewing work in Taut. But first, make sure you have your classes set up and students onboarded in Google Classroom. Click Google Classroom in the sidebar to access your account fast at any time.

2. Create assignment

Create a task for your students and assign it to one of the classes you have in Google Classroom. The assignment will be synced and accessible in Taut as well as in Google Classroom.

3. Let your students use Taut

Your students see the assignment in Google Classroom as posted via Taut. When clicking on it, they get redirected to Taut where they can upload and turn in finished work.

All your students need is the 3 P’s — a paper, a pen, and a phone.

The magic lies in the independence from computer access—your students need to finish their work on paper, take a photo of it with their smartphone, and upload it. In short, all they need is the 3 P’s as we call it—a paper, a pen, and a phone. And that simple workflow makes Taut perfect for in-class and remote uses. Students can do their classwork or take a test that requires handwriting (like math, science, etc.) wherever they are, without switching tabs or closing the Google Meet session.

4. Review student work

Reviewing takes place in the Sketchpad — a powerful way to annotate and leave feedback on student work. Use pen and marker tools, and add comments on the image that help your students learn. When inside the app, click Practice Area in the sidebar to try it out!

5. Return work to students

When returning the work to students, all the files and grades get synced with Google Classroom. Your students get an email notification stating their work is returned and can then access it in Taut or via Google Classroom at any time and anywhere.
