This past Thursday TIQC and Queens College hosted guest speakers Benjamin and Barry Dynkin. The two brothers are the co-founders of the American Cybersecurity Institute and former TEDx speakers.

Queens College student Margarita Zias first met the brothers at TEDx Adelphi where Mr. Dynkin gave a talk about cyberwarefare and the ever evolving industry of cybersecurity. Zias, who facilitates a cybersecurity class at the Tech Incubator got in contact with them after the event and invited them to come give a guest talk in May.

During their talk, the brothers discussed several topics from their own personal passion and their experience with stories from their friends and families about how they felt very insecure and unsure about how to protect themselves. The Dynkin brothers, who began their careers as lawyers realized very quickly that the United States Government was completely ill-prepared to protect it’s citizens from cyber threats and so, they started the American Cybersecurity Institute with one goal in mind: to help protect the average citizen from ever having their information stolen and used against their will.

The Dynkin’s explained difference between cybersecurity and cyberwarefare, how cyber crime happen, and the C.I.A. triangle of information security, i.e., Confidentiality, Availability and Integrity. They offered a variety of examples to the everyday threats we face, one such being the break-in made by Korea a few years ago during which thousands of people had private images and records held ‘hostage’ and were forced to pay to unlock them. They also discussed topics such as insider threats which they claimed lay the basis for many security breaches. Allowing our information to lay around provides an “open door for someone to use it against us”. The Dynkin’s also gave a brief history of cyber conflict, and discussed the importance of asking the right questions.

By the end of the night both students and faculty felt more enlightened on this topic and we are excited to announce that Benjamin and Barry have agreed to be mentors for our cybersecurity class this summer and next fall.
