First Fridays: Summer In The City

Hosted by: The Institute of Contemporary Art/ Boston

#TGIF kicks off at The Institute of Contemporary Art/ Boston for their #FirstFriday event. What better way to enjoy the summer day than relaxing by the seaside with some BBQ and a live band? Tunes provided by DJ Big Bear.

This event is 21+ and sells out pretty quickly; advance tickets are recommended for both members and nonmembers. Admission is free for members and $15 for nonmembers.

Remember Phife Family Fun Day

Hosted by: The Remember Phife Diabetes Awareness Foundation

The world wept when the incomparable Phife Dawg from the legendary Hip Hop group, A Tribe Called Quest, passed away earlier this year from ongoing complications with his diabetes. The Remember Phife Diabetes Awareness Foundation will honor his memory through education and fun for all with their Remember Phife Family Fun Day. The event will shed light on the awareness of Diabetes in the Hiphop and Black community. Rappers Gran Puba, CL Smooth and other musicians will be performing at the event as well.

South End Open Market

Nationally recognized, the South End Open & Arts Market has become a haven and safe place for indie artists and designers from all around New England, New York and even as far south as North Carolina. Come by and see over 100 vendors! You can find almost anything under the sun at the South End Arts Market and by supporting the event, you’re consequently supporting independent business owners, artists and entrepreneurs.

It’s July 4th! Boston has a wealth of events going down to celebrate this historical day of freedom and unity. Here are a few that caught our eye.

Boston Harborfest

Hosted by: Boston Harborfest

This family-friendly event is the country’s largest Fourth of July festival. Activities include the annual opening ceremony at Faneuil Hall, historical reenactments, Freedom Trail walks, Boston Duck Tours, live entertainment and much more! While Harborfest lasts from 7.1.2016 to 7.4.2016, the events on July 4th are the most extensive and celebratory! You can check out a full schedule here- http://www.bostonharborfest.com/schedule/.

Berklee Courtyard Series Featuring Samuel Batista

Hosted by: Berklee College of Music and The Regattabar

Looking to celebrate July 4th in a more laid back, music geared setting? Check out Berklee’s Courtyard Series at The Regattabar, a venue known for its live jazz performances. Panamanian Alto Sax player Samuel Batista will be featured at this event. Relax this July 4th and enjoy some beautiful jazz in the courtyard by The Charles.

Where: The Regattabar at The Charles Hotel, One Bennett St, Cambridge MA. This event will be held in the Upper Courtyard of The Charles Hotel

Cabo Verde Independence Day Celebration

While July 4th may be America’s Independence Day, it’s important to remember that the fight for freedom is a global goal. Come out and celebrate Cape Verde’s Independence Day, a country that only just became liberated from colonial powers 41 years ago. The event will highlight Cape Verdean traditional music, food and dance! There will also be plenty of live music, live visual art, exciting vendors and children’s activities.

Cultural Activism: The Art Of Change

Hosted by: Massachusetts Jobs With Justice!

Recover from a weekend of partying with this summer series about using art as a medium for social activism and change. This event will explore the importance of art, its role in culture and how it facilitates and promotes protest. There will be trainings on the skills you need to make change in your workplaces schools, neighborhoods, and communities!

Revere Rooftop Afterwork Networking Series

Unwind after a long day at work with a couple of cocktails at this event dedicated to entrepreneurs, small business owners, and young professionals in the Boston area. The goal is to bring together a weekly gathering of diverse professionals. Everyone is invited to share ideas, meet potential clients, and build on new & existing relationships.

Caribbean Celebration: Open Mic, Music & Dancing

Hosted by: Bella Luna Restaurant & Milky Way Lounge, Nomadik Soulkore and DJ Bruno

Turn up on a Thursday! Come out to celebrate the beautiful and diverse cultures of the Caribbean with poetry, music, food and drink. This event will have plenty of spoken word, Calypso, Reggae, Salsa, Soca & Zouke! Two of Boston’s most talented DJs will be working the turntables as well. If interested in performing, show up by 9:30 to be added to the open mic list.
