Creative Mornings: Boston-Equality

Hosted by: We, Ceremony

What started off as a casual conversation, Iliana and Mu realized how much they have in common — from their frustration towards whiteness to the normalcy of gender inequality. Their pride in their cultural individuality led them to regard style as a celebration of diverse experiences, thus resulting in We, Ceremony.

We, Ceremony is a response to the lack of representation and the negative portrayal of women of color in everyday life. With our collected stories, we celebrate the unique voices within our community, while challenging society to confront the issues rooted in systemic racism.

This talk will focus on the personal narratives of Iliana and Mu, as women of color from El Salvador and Taiwan, respectively, and how storytelling can be used as a tool for healing and validation, while empowering communities and uplifting voices rarely heard from, but urgently needed.

Our Houses, Our Voices: Rally for Affordable Homes

Hosted by: Citizens’ Housing and Planning Association, Inc. CHAPA

Join residents, housing advocates, and policymakers to rally in support of federal investments in affordable homes and our communities! Speakers will include Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Congresswoman Katherine Clark.

Too many families are struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Nationally, only 25% of families in need receive housing assistance, which means millions of people do not have an affordable place to call home. The President and Congress are proposing devastating cuts that would increase housing instability and homelessness, including cuts to Section 8 and public housing. Our communities and state are working hard to address the challenges we face in Massachusetts. We cannot do it alone. Federal partnership is critical to creating vibrant communities.

People will be rallying together in front of Faneuil Hall to urge Congress to invest in affordable homes and our communities. Join CHAPA to ensure that everyone has the right to a safe, accessible, and affordable home.

Where: Sam Adams Park (in front of Faneuil Hall), 1 Faneuil Hall Square, Boston, MA 02109

About THE KING OF LOVE IS DEAD:

It’s 1968 in Gateway City — a momentous year in American history in an “everyone knows everyone” town. All over the country, the riots, sit-ins, and marches of the Civil Rights Movement rage on; a plea for equality echoing through streets, homes, and hearts. The Jones’ — the epitome of a loving, respectable church going family — find themselves struggling to navigate and uphold a normal life as they are confronted by hate, police brutality, and political corruption. Told through the narration of Crispus, the youngest son in the family, The King of Love is Dead explores whether or not the love of family can prevail when challenged by a discriminatory society trying to tear them apart.
