MFA First Fridays: Frida Khalo

“Bring your circle of friends to First Friday and celebrate “Dos Mujeres” by Frida Kahlo! Party like Frida would have in 1929 when she celebrated the first work she ever sold, which will be on view in the Art of the Americas Wing as part of the new installation, “Kahlo and Her Circle.”

Join the MFA for fine art, music, bars featuring signature cocktails, and delicious snacks available for purchase.

Soul In the Square

Kick-off your weekend with an outdoor music fest in Roxbury! Soul in the Square will have plenty of live music, including D. J. and Producer, Rich Medina out of Brooklyn, New York along with Highland Park’s own D.J. Chris Grant.

The main stage will be set up on the grounds of the First Church in Roxbury with local artists producing live art, vendors and food trucks outside of its’ perimeter on Roxbury Street. Bring a blanket and chairs and get comfy in the spacious First Church Yard Lawn to enjoy various musical tributes, including tributes to Phife Dawg, David Bowie, Maurice White, Natalie Cole, Prince & more!

By creating opportunities for both seasoned sound smiths and new-to-the-game beat makers, the showcase is a chance to share a stage, network, gain exposure and battle for cash/prizes. Established in 2013, this showcase chooses to place more emphasis on the creative side of music production through its clever challenges and untraditional beat battle structure.”

Roxbury Loop: Boston’s Farm To Table Secret

Join Haley House for an interactive tour celebrating our community’s accomplishment of closing the “food loop.”

“Dudley Dough, CERO Cooperative, and Haley House’s Thornton Street Farm offer a new paradigm for how a community working together can close the food loop, while also creating jobs, stimulating the local economy, and promoting social justice. Every week, CERO staff collect food waste from Haley House’s Dudley Dough pizza shop to be composted, saving it from landfill and incinerators. CERO workers then fill up the truck with rich compost, made from last year’s food scraps, for delivery to Haley House’s Thornton Street Farm (located up the hill from Dudley Dough, in Roxbury’s Highland Park) and other local growers. Some of the food grown at the Thornton Street Farm makes its way down to Dudley Dough to top the delicious wholegrain pizza and to Haley House Bakery Cafe where youth enroll in cooking classes and formerly incarcerated trainees learn job skills while cooking up great eats for the community at affordable prices.”

The Boston Ujima Project

“The Boston Ujima Project is organizing neighbors, workers, business owners and investors to create a new community controlled economy in Greater Boston.We are challenging poverty and developing our communities by organizing our savings, businesses and customers to grow local wealth and meet our own needs.

UJIMA (oo-JEE-mah) is a Swahili word, and the celebrated Kwanzaa principle for “collective work and responsibility”. Ujima inspires us to take responsibility for our communities, to see our neighbor’s problems as our own, and to build collective power to solve them together. The Ujima Project demonstrates new ways to invest, work, buy, own, and advocate.”

ICA Summer Teen Night: Look At Yourself/ Ourselves

Hosted by: Institutute of Contemporary Arts Teen Programs

The ICA is putting on a great FREE event for teenagers of all ages in order to introduce them to the importance of the arts! Teens can jump on the open mic to share stories and poetry or just sit back and network with other like minded kids. There will be plenty of FREE food, food trucks, art making, LIVE music and tours of the ICA. There will also be performances by the youth and the night will round out with a dance party! Don’t miss it!
