Is “Faking It” The New Research?

Technology moves at such a rate that at the pointy end there can’t any experts. Sure, you can be great at particular building blocks, be it design, code or marketing, but the new things and new jobs are often variations and amalgamations of stuff that have gone before.

There was a time when social media was a new thing — a hybrid of journalism, storytelling, community management and content creation. Now, it’s just what it is — you can study it, major in it, and find a job doing it.

So then, in terms of design, is the expert paradigm still relevant? Will the successful designer of the future be all about “faking it” to win pitches and projects, all the while just figuring it out? Will being a visionary, networker and manager be the new prized skill set, a combination that is able to pull together an agile team to deliver what has never gone before?

But then again, great designers have always done that. And by delivering greatness to each project, bigger and better opportunities often follow.
