The popularity of photo sharing by platforms such as Instagram have nurtured a vanity-obsessed culture. The rise of selfies has hit mainstream and when the oldies start doing it, you know it’s time to move on.
But it’s not only a teenage-fuelled desire for fifteen minutes of fame — anyone who has stepped into the real world has quickly learnt that who you know often trumps what you know. And it is in the precious first impressions, LinkedIn profile browsing and corporate schmoozes that looking your best can often mean a leg up on the competition.
Social network strength is a metric that is often left by the wayside in favour of skill sets, recommendations and likes — of course, it’s a relative intangible. But ask most people how they got that job, promotion or opportunity, and it won’t come as a surprise to learn that it was through a contact.
Then again, there are those who prefer anonymity. And perhaps, it’s safer to be off-grid when SkyNet gains consciousness.
