Alligators —

I was driving with a friend to a safari park in the Florida Everglades to view alligators. Then I looked out the window and spotted two hefty specimens speeding through the canals alongside the road.

We had already gotten a ringside view of the Everglades’ chief attraction. Should we still proceed to the park?

We debated the matter. But we were less than three miles from our destination and had already bought tickets for the safari.

Just another day in the swamp —

At the park, an airboat chugged us into a sea of sawgrass edged with mangroves. Here and there, alligator snouts rippled the water.

Herons stood one-legged (not this one) on grassy islets.

Watch out. A gator might sneak up on you!
