Teachable’s Intern Corner: Tech Hackathon

Get to know Teachable’s interns! You’ll get an inside look at the cool projects our interns are working on. In this edition, get to know two of our amazing engineering interns, Rivka Bar-Chaim and Huiyu Guan, and their recent hackathon experience.

What pod are you a part of at Teachable?

RBC: The growth team!

HG: The student commerce pod.

What did your team build at the Hackathon?

RBC: A To-Do app.

HG: A job hunter app.

What was your role on your Hackathon team?

RBC: Helping to organize the idea, creating and designing React components.

HG: Writing code about creating a route.

What was your favorite thing about the Hackathon?

RBC: It was super cool to get to meet people from other teams at teachable. I enjoyed the presentations — that was fun!

HG: Everyone is very nice!

What was the most memorable challenge that you faced in your Hackathon? What did you learn from it?

RBC: Working so quickly meant learning to find shortcuts — one was using the Material UI components which saved a lot of time. It took a little while to figure out how to properly implement them — but once we did it was super useful!

HG: At the beginning we needed to create at least three different pages and needed to create routers to get the three pages connected. Melissa and I spent a long time on this and we used many ways that didn’t work, but kept searching and finally when we tried a certain way it suddenly worked. I learned that you need to keep trying to get it to work.

While being primarily remote, how was it working with colleagues “IRL”?

RBC: It was great to go into the office, get to know new people, and get a chance to be creative on this project! It was the first time I’ve done a hackathon and I had a great time.

HG: I think in the zoom meeting with the microphone and camera on, it will be no different from normal communication.
