What is the mission of the ERG? How does the mission impact the employee experience?

The mission of Black Employees at Teachable (BE@T) is to uplift employees of African descent at Teachable by providing a safe space for open dialogue, while also making a cultural impact through professional development and community outreach opportunities.

What value are you looking to provide ERG members? How do you hope this will impact the rest of the company? To our creators?

One of our values at Teachable (that lives rent-free in my head) is “focus on customers — we win when our customers win, success is mutual.” I think a company’s #1 customer is its employees. A company can not “win” if its most valuable resources, employees, do not feel supported, safe, and included.

As one of the ERG leads, I hope to continue providing a space that is engaging and uplifting, so that the members of the ERG feel empowered in their day-to-day jobs. It’s also always nice to provide opportunities for social events that our members can look forward to.

Being a part of Black Employees at Teachable (BE@T) means I have a safe space to share my thoughts or any concerns with colleagues who share a similar experience as me being a person of color. It is nice being a part of an organization that prioritizes my welfare and an inclusive workplace for all of its employees.

What are you most proud of about the ERG?

This quarter, our employee resource group brought in guest speakers to capture the creator economy through the lens of black creators. This company-wide event was an interactive workshop giving our teams insight into the opportunities and challenges faced by black creators and providing guidance on ways we can increase inclusivity and remove barriers for them in the creator economy. Over 50 Teachable employees joined to find more ways to scale businesses for black creators!

What does the quarter (or year) ahead look like for the ERG?

More social events! For BE@T, we’ll be doing a candle-making event and a cross-functional St. Patrick-themed happy hour with the API (Asian and Pacific Islander) ERG.

How has the ERG impacted your time at Teachable?

BE@T has provided me with more opportunities to lead and project-manage large-scale events! Having opportunities for fellowship is critical in a remote-first working environment.

Alternatively, is there anyone you think would be a great teachable creator?

I love all things astrology! I came across Nadine’s school where she offers courses to people for horoscope readings! I am a self-taught astrologist and give my coworkers free natal birth chart readings, but it’s nice to learn from people who are experts.
