Daddy’s Favorites

This month’s book review is Daddy’s Favorites, written by Elissa Joy and illustrated by Dionne Victoria. I read this book to my daughter and she fondly calls it, “The Jilly Book”.

Elissa Joy and I met in the summer of 2018 at the Spark Summit (an event hosted by ISTE TEN each year the day before ISTE) in Chicago. Our kindred spirits immediately connected when we found that we are both special education and educational technology enthusiasts. We kept in touch and when I found out that she wrote a book about a child with autism I had to share it with you! My teacher’s heart lept for joy! So, let me tell you a bit about the Jilly book! 😄

I enjoyed the fact that it is written from the perspective of a sibling. Jilly is Danny’s sister and she shares about her family, day home from school, and having a brother with autism. Elissa the author describes some areas that people with autism may struggle with for example loud noises, sensory needs, speech, behaviors, and more.

But my favorite part of the book is when Elissa details the strengths that Danny has in the area of music and playing the piano. Elissa details the importance of routines for children with autism in a subtle way by going through a bedtime routine. Elissa shares how a sibling might feel in public with a brother or sister with autism, attention, and affection from parents, and family dynamic.
