The Children of the Children We Lied To

High Schools in the United States are about to be filled with the children of the children of No Child Left Behind, the children of the Great Recession, the children of the Student Loan Disaster.

The parents of the students who will enter high school and universities over the next decade are the people we have betrayed with our false promises about education and opportunity. They have been left behind in our pursuit of, or our tolerance of, enormous greed. They know they were deceived about how test prep teaching would improve education — especially for those we assured that schools would become more equitable if only we made them more miserable places.

The great recession was the work of terrible elected leaders

They know we lied to them when we told them their grades mattered, the chase for elite colleges mattered, and that higher education was worth any cost. They spent their adolescence and early adult life living in a world of idiotic wars, lowered living standards, fewer civil rights, increased segregation, government violence, and government inaction. Now they and their children watch as major politicians denigrate education, refuse to fund education or deal with student loans, and when Ivy League — and Ivy League-wannabe — college presidents call the police in to shut…
