There are vast collections of art and artifacts available for everyone to admire worldwide. Within buildings you can stamble upon living stories, myths, and cultures of different countries, walls decorated with art pieces etc. I am reffering to prominent people who left their mark on the passage of time, pilasters created inspired by various styles of architecture, and imposing statues which were created to glorify human ideals. I am talking about museums across the globe that all have one thing in common; the ability to make your jaw drop as soon as you step through their doors.

I tend to take a glimpse at the past as museums is where you can ressurect everything the time has drifted away. Nevertheless, the past hides a cryptic appeal inside itself and every museum defines his own baffling feeling.

But let’s focus on the value that a museum can have in the educational process of an adolescent. The term ‘museum education’ is defined as: pedagogy, the field of which lies in the museum. Modern museum-pedagogical reflection comes as an interdisciplinary meeting of findings from many sciences. It is based on modern pedagogical theories and is associated with the conduct of educational activities within the museum, activities aimed at school-age.

The idea of young children visiting museums with their schools, was born in the late 19th century, beginning with the Louvre Museum. The visitor is no longer a passive receiver, but acts actively. In what ways you may ask. By completing questionnaires, by designing exhibits, by touching objects, etc.

Questionnaires can be used, in essence, as short guides for learning new information and gaining knowledge. The design catches the eye, while the palpation of the objects has as a direct result the realization of the material of the exhibit. In these ways the learner sharpens his judgment and imagination, depending on creativity.

It is there, in the museum, that very often what is learned in the environment of the school is connected with both history and reality. Theory acquires a tangible dimension of truth. Students can see and recognise the exhibit, understanding in that way the vision of the creator.

However, the visit of a school community to a museum requires good preparation. Nowadays, all over the world there are various methods of work and preparation, in order to lead to the active participation of the student in the museum. The special pedagogical departments of the museums organize this work, as they consist of a specialized educational team in this specifical field. The knowledge of the school curriculum and good cooperation with the school teacher are considered necessary in order to both facilitate the learning process and capture children’s interest.

If you are interested in planning your next exhilarating cultural day, take a moment and read carefully about the top 5 museums from my point of you.
