Love Means Nothing?
It was a lazy Saturday afternoon. My stomach ached and so I chose a cozy blanket and curled up in front of the television. Having only four channels I settled on watching the sports channel.
I find it exciting to watch professionals play their game. Their precision, speed and agility are to be admired. But something caught my eye that caused my stomach to hurt even more.
Along the billboards, companies bought advertising space with catchy logos. One company decided on the slogan,
“Love Means Nothing.”
I was appalled. How can they say such a thing? Love means everything! Without love, the world would be a cesspool of hate. Love is good. God is love. How dare they promote such vulgarity?
At the epic of my outrage my son walked in the living room and joined me to watch the game. A moment later he uttered, “Oh, I get it.”
“What?” I asked through clenched teeth.
“See where it says ‘love means nothing’?”
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, I thought. My son is as upset about the slogan as I am.
“It’s a tennis game,” he continued. “So when the score is zero they call it ‘love’. Get it? Love means zero. Love means nothing.”
Feeling the fool, I just smiled and nodded at my clever son.
