Is learning Mathematics important? My thoughts.

--

Maths has always been a favourite subject of most of the Indian parents & therefore some push their kids into it. They try to do want not possible from private tuitions to special classes like Vedic Math, Abacus etc on for their child to become master in Math or develop a liking to Math.

But is learning maths really is so important or is it just because many of the highly paid career in today’s time need maths as subject to their basics which is not the correct thinking. I say this because most of the highly paid jobs will never remain same in future. As in past, once Field of Arts was considered to be one of the most sophisticated one and was therefore valued most. With Artificial Intelligence gaining much of the attention, these days it is said to replace most of the present jobs within next 10 yrs.

The question is — will math remain of same importance?

I’m teaching Maths for last 12 yrs, from asking questions like “How is Derivatives, Integration etc. like topics, relevant to us in real life?” to my teachers from answering that questions to my students my journey with maths is full of fun and adventure, but also monotonous sometimes.

But to answer the question — ‘How are such topics relevant to us in real life?’

My answer to this is- Yes and No, both.

Why Yes?

For me yes it is very important, being teacher it’s what full filled my bread butter hahaha :p , But to be serious, it won’t be wrong to say that it is more relative to the field that one choose his or her career in, like for some one in tech field it’s of course relevant in today’s time as data science being so much of importance, it is directly been application of maths and statistics. But yes, for argument on this, its true as well as you may as how many of us are or will be in field of technology working at core? — merely 1% or less.

But one thing that is sure to be kept in mind while learning math — this subject is not only for direct applications it is also for developing our aptitude and analytical mind. You must have read some article or know this about human’s right brain and left brain work-

A person who is “left-brained” is often said to be more logical, analytical, and objective. A person who is “right-brained” is said to be more intuitive, thoughtful, and subjective. In psychology, the theory is based on the lateralisation of brain function.

So at large, yes it’s not only about what is direct application of Math in our day to day life, instead, Math is important for developing our Left brain i.e more of logical, analytical and objective.

Why No?

Of course my answer would be “No” to those who are very clear about their careers. To those who by any chance will not be going in the field which requires more of problem-solving, logical thinking or analytical mindset. May be fields like creativity, Fine Arts, Languages, many more doesn’t require serious knowledge of Math. I would love to know your thoughts if you agree/disagree with this.

I personally believe, our life is surrounded by most of the activities/things which requires atleast some part of LEFT BRAIN THINKING and that’s why we cannot afford to ignore Math as subject completely. We should at-least be able solve basics, that may be topic which are taken till Std 10th.

If you wish to learn any topic in Math or want to clear doubt, I invite you to try Teachmitra to do so, Just select Learn & Search for Math & schedule your Connect session with one of the Peer who you think will be able to solve your problem. (P.S You can find me too!)

I would like to close this argument by Albert Einstein’s Quote-

Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.

Let me know if you loved reading my blogs in the comments here & also about what you think about learning Math?
