Friday 25 April 2020: Brisbane-based EdTech Teach Starter has seen a 39% surge in subscriptions over the past twelve months and is now providing online teaching resources to over 750 000 teachers and parents globally.

With the forced shift to online learning, Teach Starter’s expanded offering now includes a curriculum-aligned education supplement for parents and carers. This has seen 90 000 new accounts created and 250 000 downloads of free Home Learning Packs in the past month.

Teach Starter co-founder Scott Tonges said things have changed a little since their humble start-up beginnings in a Brisbane share house in 2012.

“We started out with a mailing list that gave away free teaching resources and pretty quickly saw it was popular, so built a website. In our first 6 months we had 10 000 members — that was a huge milestone,” said Mr Tonges.

From a website that launched with 200 resources, the Teach Starter platform is now the home to over 140,000 pages of teaching resources. With website traffic showing a 60% increase since this time last year, things have definitely scaled-up for Teach Starter.

“During these unprecedented times, we’ve been able to adapt and provide resources to support more teachers and families across Australia. For us, business is about more than just the bottom line. Revenue is essential for the sustainability of a business; however, it shouldn’t come at the expense of all else. We have a responsibility to our team, our teaching community and to those without the means to seek our help,” Mr Tonges said.

Normally a subscription-based model, Teach Starter has opened its database to teachers and parents for one-month free access to its 140 000+ pages of online resources to support teachers, parents and students until 30 April 2020.

The resources available range from activity sheets, information packs, home learning packs, educational videos along with access to Teach Starter’s new product, Assess. All resources are available digitally but are also printable, providing teachers with a solution to support those students without access to a device or the internet.

“It’s a unique time for the education industry. The recent shift to online learning has the potential to change the way classrooms operate in the future. As we all navigate this new way of learning together, Teach Starter will continue to innovate and adapt to support teachers, parents and students and help make classrooms buzz,” Tonges said.
