The Fons Story
When we first started Fons, I ran a successful business in Seattle as a music teacher. I saw about 50 clients a week, happily supporting my family. My wife Alyson took care of all the business tasks such as scheduling, notifications, invoicing, & chasing payments. She worked a minimum of 10 hours a week, and did an incredible job. We pieced together 4–5 softwares to support our business this way for over a decade.
Then, I had the extremely good fortune of connecting with Jared Wray, a very successful technology innovator & visionary. We took a deep dive into the prevailing business models of appointment-based entrepreneurs. Jared made the awesome observation that all current softwares on the market didn’t really innovate upon or solve the problems of running a business…they merely packaged them differently.

We assembled a small team & spent a month timing every single task we faced in our teaching business. Creating invoices, cashing checks, texting clients, & sending payment reminders were all tallied. We did the same thing with , personal trainers, academic tutors, wellness professionals, athletic coaches, and consultants to see just how much work it was to run a business.
We analyzed stress-points such asking for late payments, receiving incomplete invoice payments, and explaining last minute cancellation policies. We stack-ranked them in order of what was most common, and what were most stressful.
Here’s what we found.
