Like a good website, web design is ever evolving. And like all great artists, great web design professionals find inspiration in each other. Here are five trends our designers are watching now you should keep an eye out for too.

1. Bigger & Bolder

Sites go big and bold right now, with huge images and headlines that solidly anchor pages before leading users into a chunky array of content. These designs take advantage of stunning photography and short-form video, which is easier than ever to load thanks to the advances in modern browsers and increased bandwidth across our devices.

2. 80s Excess Is Everywhere

With big, bold design on their minds, it’s no surprise designers are turning to the 80s for inspiration. Gone are the boring muted palettes — we see colors that are bold and vibrant splashed across the web. We’re loving the bright neon colors that call our name as 80s-style excess takes center stage.

3. Stock Photos Are Out. Custom Illustrations Are In

Say goodbye to standard icon sets and boring stock photography. Instead expect beautiful illustrated icons that give modern sites a custom vibe. Instead of stock photos, look for illustrated infographics which convey unique concepts with ease, leave users informed, and artists inspired.

4. Animations Bring Pages to Life

Blame it on the .gif resurgence, but large and small-scale animations are everywhere. Animations bring energy to the smallest details of a page and add personality. In a page headers, simple videos, including cinemagraphs, replace static images and better engage the user and capture their attention and imagination.

5. More Interesting Typography

Designers are just as sick of Helvetica as you are — and that’s good news. We’re seeing a mix of the classic fonts we know and love with more custom typography that has a handwritten feel. All of this is made possible because of better browser capacity and the ability to license these creative fonts from places like Typekit, by Adobe.

All of these trends echo things we’ve seen rise in popularity in the past year. But images, animations, colors, and type are bigger, bolder, and louder than ever before. We’ll be watching to see where these trends go next.
