Demo day

We present to you… our Jack the Ripper app!

A few weeks ago, when I was a ‘junior’ or ‘mid’ on the Makers course, I always wondered what the ‘seniors’ could possibly still be doing on the final day of the course — why they were all still coding feverishly when it was already demo day and their presentation would be in a matter of hours.

Now I know.

On Thursday, we’d practiced our presentation on our coach Michael, and he’d advised us to redesign the slide show on KeyNote. So that’s what I spent the whole of Friday morning doing. Josh worked on improving our test coverage. Meanwhile Danielle, Roberta, Jay and Alec tried to set constraints on our app so that we could demo it on an iPad as currently it was designed for iPhone 11. Alas, we didn’t manage to do it in time for the demo as some of the challenges refused to comply.

But our demo day users seemed pleased! The format of the day is that during an hour in the afternoon, visitors can visit stalls by all the different teams and try out their apps. Our September 2019 cohort had a really nice range of apps which, as well as our geo-location game, included a physics ball throw/scrabble game, a music maker, a packing assistant and a sports pairing app.

Users really enjoyed our game and we were asked a lot of questions about Swift, Xcode, how we managed to design it in just two weeks, and how we got some of the challenges to work. Those five challenges in our game proved pretty difficult, especially Alec’s picture scramble at the end, which some visitors to our table spent a considerable amount of time on.

Now we move on with our new skills, and as one of our cohort poignantly pointed out, it’s likely that this was the last time all of us would be in one room together. Makers has a great alumni network though, so we’ll keep in touch.

Thanks for reading! Here are some pics of our team. For earlier blogs, please visit this page.
