Towards Post Anthropocentric Cities
Tan Yigitcanlar, Marcus Foth & Md. Kamruzzaman

What is the main argument of the paper?

The argument of the paper revolves around defining the stages in the development of the cities and what should the city developers, policy makers and citizens alike consider when envisioning the suture of the cities which would exist in a post anthropocentric era. It upholds the vision of a future which is more than Human and must consider sustainability, Zero waste and acknowledges and accommodates for our ecological entanglements with ecology.

Why is the work important? How does it relate to the design challenge brief?

This body of work is particularly important for outlining the development of the ideas of city and its relationship with the technology. Stating the various players which were key in that stage, what that state intended to do and what were its unintended consequences. The past patterns could very well be used to predict the likelihood of the future. It relates to the brief by exposing how the idea of a smart city should evolve, to look beyond just human needs and how technocracy has ruled over the idea and aspiration of development.

What research methods were used?

Purposive selection, analysis and synthesis of secondary research was the methodology employed. A lot of data cited uses case studies, surveys and results from laboratory experiments and field experiments.

What further opportunities for design interventions could you explore?

Design avenues which open up are that of looking at zero waste, look at valuables becoming enablers of
innovation, protectors, expressors in strngthening the social capital
