Trump said he’d “take care of” women. Here’s how I’ll fight for them.

No more broken promises — I’ll stand up for women, including fighting for their reproductive rights

Our country needs to ask ourselves a question: Do we value women? Because if we do, then we need to stop treating their rights as negotiable. Unfortunately, our government has a persistent habit of building compromise on women’s backs — and when the negotiating room door closes, it tends to be reproductive rights that go out the window first.

Attacks on reproductive freedom don’t only hurt women, and women’s rights aren’t limited to reproductive rights either. Women deserve a president who’ll fight for them in every sphere, from ensuring equal pay and paid leave to protecting families from gun violence and discrimination. But we’ve spent decades playing defense on reproductive rights, and they’ve never been more at risk than right now. It’s time to go on offense — and that starts with replacing the misogynist who’s currently in the White House.

President Trump’s broken promise

President Trump has a history of saying he “cherishes” women, and his actions couldn’t disprove that more — whether it’s his sexist insults or the dozen-plus allegations of sexual harassment and assault against him. As president, he’s taken particular aim at reproductive freedom — which is fitting, because it’s at the core of women’s human rights and equal standing in society.

President Trump has appointed over 100 federal judges — including two Supreme Court justices — many of whom are anti-abortion. He’s enacted a domestic gag rule to prevent clinics like Planned Parenthood from referring patients for abortion. And he’s taken steps to allow health care providers to refuse care to patients based on their personal beliefs — including abortion and even birth control.

These are not the actions of someone who respects women. These are the actions of someone who wants to control women.

How I’ll fix it

Unlike President Trump, I believe reproductive rights are human rights, and they are non-negotiable. That’s why I was the first 2020 candidate to roll out a comprehensive reproductive rights agenda that goes on the offensive to protect our fundamental rights. Here’s my plan:

I’ll protect the courts from anti-choice extremists.

I was the first candidate to vow that as president, I will only appoint judges and Supreme Court justices who recognize Roe v. Wade as settled law. This is important, because with Republican state legislators escalating their assault on reproductive health care access, we need to ensure that our judiciary will be a firewall for our most basic rights.

I’ll codify Roe v. Wade.

Furthermore, I’ll codify Roe v. Wade into law to make it clear that everyone in this country has a constitutional right to safe and legal abortion, and ensure that it can never be overturned.

I’ll repeal the Hyde Amendment.

The Hyde Amendment disproportionately restricts abortion access for low-income women and women of color. I’ll end it.

I’ll guarantee access to reproductive care, including safe and legal abortion, in all 50 states.

The ability to exercise a constitutional right shouldn’t depend on your zip code, income level, or anything else. I’ll require private insurers to cover abortion services, regardless of state law. I’ll also create a separate federal funding stream to ensure reproductive health center access in every state and every region of the country. And we’ll protect Title X funding and health care providers like Planned Parenthood, expanding access to critical health care like family planning, cancer screenings, and abortion.

For too long, issues like reproductive rights, paid family leave, affordable child care, and early childhood education have been dismissed as “women’s issues.” In my administration, we’ll close that book once and for all. If we’re going to be a country that values women as not just half of our society, but equal members of our society, then we have to stop debating whether they should be able to control their own bodies and determine their own futures.

I believe President Trump’s kryptonite is a strong woman who can’t be silenced or intimidated out of fighting for what’s right. I’ve spent my entire career fighting for women, and I’m not about to stop now.
