Our process involved crazy 8’s, sprint, empathy mapping, ecosystem mapping and controversy mapping. The explorations led us to looking at how the farming community has been neglected and overlooked by the populous of India. Our secondary research on the current situations of farmers made us look at empathy as a crucial element that we focused on.

Some of the ideas that we lingered on were:

•How to build stronger communities through strengthening the culture

•How to spread awareness through education

•How to engage the community in active participation

•How can we make the community self sufficient and sustainable

One of the ideas that we explored was barter system and how that could allow sharing of commodities during times of crisis. This made us think about how the community can share goods and services so as to be self sufficient. We came up with this whilst looking at already existing relationships between farming families.

After digging deeper into this barter system solution, we discovered that it is already in practice but in an informal way (i.e., farmers have already taken this solutions — — kitchen gardens to support themselves and each other in times of crisis).

This made us realize that we need to build a system that involved other communities that could help the farming communities when need be.

We all know that we are directly dependent on the farming sector, but we hardly know the stories of these farmers. This led us into thinking about how we can make the stories of these farmers ubiquitous, specifically to the city dwellers who are ignorant or mere observers to the plight of the farmers. We felt the need to build empathy towards the farmers and hence our final solution mainly addresses how to build resilience in farmers through the contribution of citizens of cities.
