AIS 140 and Why you should know about it !

In the aftermath of Nirbhaya Incident and Pradyumna Case, Government of India came up with the AIS 140 regulation to ensure safety and security inside transportation media. It was a long standing problem that had haunted civilians as well as security officials as it is particularly difficult to stop criminal activities carried out in moving vehicles or to apprehend the culprits.

The aforementioned and various other similar occurrences in the past have revealed a glaring lack of security measures and safety standards for the daily commuters of our country. Among them, Women and school going children are particularly vulnerable. The underlying threat of being entirely clueless of the safety and whereabouts of your family members, especially children, is increasing day by day with apparent rise in criminal activities perpetrated in buses and other vehicles. To tackle this issue of Women and Child Safety, Indian Government has initiated ITS under ALL INDIA STANDARD 140.This regulation makes following tracking facilities mandatory for all public transportation vehicles and private transportation providers,

• Vehicle Location Tracking (VLT)
• Emergency Request Button
• Camera Surveillance System

Thus under Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) all the public transportation media, especially school buses, must have a Location Tracking System installed and it must be regularly updated under the AIS 140 certification and specifications entailed in it. Vehicles implemented with AIS 140 device must have an Emergency button or SOS that allows for Immediate halting of the vehicle in times of danger or security bleaches.
