Earthquake survivor: Arifudin’s story

On 28 September, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck near the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, triggering a tsunami that measured up to 18 feet in some areas.

Thousands of people are known to have died following the earthquake and tsunami, and at least 5,000 are still missing.

To date, 83,000 people have been displaced from their homes and are living in shelters.

Here’s the story of one of the survivors

This is Arifudin. His home and livelihood were devastated in the Indonesian earthquake.

But he was one of the lucky ones. His family all survived.

“Our house is now completely destroyed. We only saved a few items.”

Thousands weren’t so lucky. Over 2000 are confirmed dead, with many thousands still unaccounted for.

At least 46,000 children have been affected, many separated from their families.

The situation is desperate.
