4 Things I wish I knew before pursuing MBA

How important is to be an MBA

I was not clear what I wanted to be from Day 1. Just like every typical Indian Middle class family child I wanted to be a Doctor. Yes, sounds too cliche. I pursued this dream till class 12th Boards. Then came the Game Changer 12th Board Exam results yes that phase gave my career choice a 248 degree turn (360 is a circle) .

I flunked my 12th, failed according to Indian Education system (too old to sob)

Then I pursued Mass communication (I researched this time before pursuing the choice). But that’s a different story some other day.

So I opted MBA, driven by a thought and craving. The thought was that if I need a JOB in an MNC I need to be an MBA & the Craving was to have a Title next to my name CEO- Chief Executive Officer

But I wish I knew these points earlier. I could have saved enough to start a Start-Up :P and still achieve what I wanted.

1. The Myth, The Thought

The myth conquered my soul that a regular post graduate degree is must for a good job with handsome package. Big MNC will not even except my CV if I don’t check the box of Masters.
So I dropped my amazing Job as Event Executive Manager and started afresh as a Business Consultant later after MBA.

To be honest, I would have been on a higher profile with a better package if I would have continued the job along with a Distance learning Programme with reputed colleges like ICFAI University, Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning and so on.

2. You need to be Master of one & Jack of all trades

Your Post graduation degree may say that you have specialized in a specific trait but trust me i.e. not sufficient. You would still be performing all the activities and jobs in your organization no matter what your Appointment letter says and that’s how actually you survive in the Corporate Circus. To be honest, at some front, this is a good thing you can be a filler, a fit to all misfit places, but yes along with this don’t forget to Master one specific trade.

It is important to be Master of ONE.

3. You are your own Teacher — Self Study
I am not asking to write notes and mug them up. Self study is a very important to educate yourself, to learn. You know the best that what’s important ?

what will be applied by you. 80% of time it’s all about case studies in an MBA class.

If you continue to educate yourself you don’t need an MBA degree to achieve your dreams. This online era has provided zillion of sources to learn, it’s just one should have that thirst to learn.

4. MBA does not mean You will have a JOB

MBA kr lo bahut achi naukri milegi.. Please don’t pay heed to such rumors. MBA is a kind of personality development class where they develop you, train you to be a part of the corporate world. Of course you learn some industry specific jargons which gives you an edge over fresh graduates.

No course or college guarantee you a Job, they assist you with the Job. They make you ready for the platform where Jobs are, but ultimately it’s you who has to qualify it.

Be an MBA or not, if you don’t possess the right skill set you won’t get the JOB.

I am not against the idea of MBA. My only suggestion is to do self analysis before pursuing any course. You are the best judge for your aspirations, your qualities.

Don’t be intimidated by choice of your classmates or some random neighbour’s child. Do proper research because sometimes what happens outside the classroom is more important.
