Prototypes

Our Design Lead Stephanie Liao created wireframes for our concept finalized through value testing last week. Our museum exhibit has three main parts:

  1. Wizard-of-Oz Paper Prototype cueing projection of the island based on the user’s motion.
  2. Wireframes explaining the renewable energies unreliable nature due to constantly changing weather.
  3. An animation exploring the balance of consumption and production.

James tackled the first prototype. He found footage from the Electricity Company of Madeira that highlights the surrounding landscapes and it’s use for energy production.

Stephanie created wireframes for solar, wind, and hydro showcasing different challenges with using these elements as reliable energy sources. Christyne made an interactive prototype in InVision.

The third prototype was an After Effects animation that went through multiple iterations. James and Stephanie set out to create a time lapse animation that showcased the relation between energy use and consumption. The animation was simplified to a brief time lapse and a bar graph showing consumption and production.

Usability Testing

Next we prepared for a usability test. I prepared a plan to measure student’s learning and interactions with the museum prototypes. Learning was quantified through a survey deployed before the think aloud and once the test had been completed. A difficult form of learning is a change in perspective. I attempted to measure a change in perspective through curiosity. Other survey questions are more fact based assessing if students took away the knowledge we intended.

Throughout the test students will be probed regarding their expectations for the prototype and any moments of confusion. The usability test has not been deployed yet, but the team is very excited to receive feedback on your designs to date.
